History

In 1983 when vascular surgery was in its infancy a group of British surgeons, with a keen interest in Vascular surgery met together in Southampton for one of the first symposiums dedicated exclusively to Vascular surgery, hosted by the local surgeon Tony Chant. From this meeting a concept attributed to Simon Darke of Bournemouth germinated into the Joint Vascular Research Group. These surgeons were keen salmon fishermen as well as friends so they decided on a regular Spring meeting to coincide with the hatching of the May fly.

This was the inception of the JVRG, Joint Vascular Research Group.

The primary intention of this group was to collaborate on clinical and scientific trials. Thus to advance the development of Vascular surgery and treatment in a structured and valid fashion and to broaden the knowledge base.

This still remains as the key motivation for the trials and studies, which the JVRG undertakes.

In the early years membership of the group was by invitation and those young surgeons who showed an exceptional enthusiasm and energy for advancing Vascular Surgery and research were nominated.

Logo

Elements of this logo reflect the background and inception of the JVRG, as well as the more obvious Vascular Surgical ethos.

In 1996 the JVRG began the fundamental changes to the constitution of the Group, from invited individual members to membership by Centre.

Both to mark this change and provide a focus for members a competition was arranged to find design or develop a logo for the group to adopt. This logo had to be capable of expansion to A4 size for presentations or contraction to a letter heading icon, for correspondence. The winning member or centre would receive a prize for the most elegant and original design which reflected the values and composition of the group.

The late Professor Aires Barros'd'Sa, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, Northern Ireland produced the winning entry and was presented with his prizes at the JVRG held at time of the VSSGBI (Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland) meeting hosted in Bournemouth UK in November 1996.

This LOGO is now displayed on our web page and major publications.
